The Story of The Great Arch
History & Construction
The Great Arch of the Defense project began in 1982 as part of France's 'Grands Travaux' (Great Works) program initiated by President François Mitterrand. The goal was to create a modern triumphal arch perfectly aligned with Paris's historical axis. Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen won the international design competition in 1983. His design was a massive white marble cube with a hollowed center forming an 'arch'. The official inauguration took place on July 14, 1989, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution.

About the Architect
Johan Otto von Spreckelsen (1929-1987) was a renowned Danish architect and designer. He was known for his minimalist and classical modernist style. Other notable works by Spreckelsen include St. Bernard's Church in Copenhagen. His design philosophy emphasized pure geometric forms, high-quality materials, and careful handling of light. Unfortunately, Spreckelsen passed away in 1987 and did not live to see the completion of the Grande Arche. The project was completed by French architect Paul Andreu.

As a French person, I consider this one of the greatest modern architectural achievements in France. It perfectly connects history and the future. The view from the deck overlooking all of Paris is absolutely not to be missed!
